What’s my line?

Remember the TV show moderated by John Charles Daly? And regular panelists Arlene Francis, Dorothy Kilgallen and Bennett Cerf? Well fine if you do, fine if you don’t. We just stole the name.

Roger Rice suggested this game. We need you to write something about yourself and submit it to us. We will post all the submissions here with just a number as the identifier. Then others will read the submissions and guess who wrote them. Then Roger Rice will take it from there.

Please write something. It can be long or short. But don’t make it too long… most of us have lost our attention spans. And patience. Send it by email to [email protected] or text it to my phone at 832.586.6802 or write it on a piece of paper, photograph it and text or email the photo to me. Or leave your story in the comment field below. Please Please Please. And you don’t have to be present to play.

We are looking for something you have done, have happen to you or anything that you find interesting, funny or out of character. Maybe something that most would not know about you. Or that you want to brag about.

Maybe What’s My Secret would have been a better title?

Submission 2
After having zero involvement in sports while in high school, I retired from my day job at age 65. At age 68, I became a certified coach in two sports, began coaching teams in both sports and will take one of those teams to the state competition in two weeks. All this while still having one child at home (in addition to my spouse). (It goes without saying that I am also chronically tired…)

Submission 3
I was trying to decide what to say when I felt about a 25 second earthquake. Not unusual here, but not what we worried about in B’ville.

Submission 4

My Journey began New Years 71. Met my life long Buddy, we have 5 children and 12 Gd Children. Since living together is a thing, we finally married. One of my moments is toasting to the wrong Son-in-law.
Don’t Give Me the Mic!

Submission 5
Born in Bartlesville. Married to a retired Radio talent. We live in Illinois and have a blended family with 6 children, 12 grandchildren. I used to work in the office of the high school and typed your tests and printed them. I designed and made a lot of my clothes. My mom went of the choir trip with us to New Mexico.

Submission 6
I was lucky enough to be able to retire comfortably in May of 2004 at the age of 51 — sounds really young now! After 11 years, I invented a new career/hobby for myself. It was something creative which I’d done as an elementary and teenage student, and as a young adult in my early twenties throughout my thirties but had not done it in the exact form I was now doing. I have been enjoying this new career/hobby immensely, and better still, it is something my husband can help me with which makes it even more fun as we create together, promote, and sell.

Submission 7
I was arrested by the police in Red China. It was in the fall of 1985, I was alone, and it was on a lonely road north of Beijing. And I was not driving. I survived the experience.

Submission 8
I ran track and threw the shot put my Junior year at Sooner High School.

Submission 9
I was born in Idaho Falls, Id. My parents however were born in Cushing and Perry, Ok. Our family moved back to Bartlesville when I was 10. One of my favorite hobbies since I retired has been making beer at home. Cheers!

Submission 10
I was a three-sport athlete in Junior College

Submission 11
I was a pretty mediocre student heading into junior year. No real study habits, but B’s and a few A’s seemed to pop-up on my report card. The smart ones were going into Chemistry, I knew that was out of my league. I think the hardest class on my schedule was trigonometry. I got by, it never seemed to click. By the end of the school year, Mr. Hecsher convinced me that I wasn’t cut out for math and let me know that this would be as far as I would get. (Spoiler alert: my name is not Jimmy Jacoby.) When it was time to make our schedules for senior year, I was curious how chemistry turned out for the ones who took it. I asked Donna Holland about it and she was nice enough to say that she thought I could. So, off I went, signing up for chemistry. Mr. Baker was a great teacher and was such a cool dude. It turned out that  I loved it and was even good at it. Mr. Baker’s class changed my life. That’s what good teachers do. We had a lot of them at Sooner. I went to OSU and majored in chemistry. A funny thing is that all A’s popped up on my report card. Finding out what I loved made all the difference. And thanks for the fun to all my friends in the class of Sooner ‘71.

Submission 12
In college, I realized I liked taking photographs of people and particularly at weddings. Later in life, while in London, during the Mama Mia musical, I got up to dance in the aisle. Not like me?

Submission 13
I was born in Canada. I appeared twice on the Tonight Show w/ Johnny Carson. 1st time w Joan Collins. 2nd time w/ Angie Dickinson, who surprising you me, had the hots for me!!!!! Now you’ll never guess.

Submission 14

I went to Will Rogers, Hoover, Madison and Sooner. I have been happily married to the same girl for 40 years. I retired at 60 but my wife made me get a part time job.

Submission. 15

During 8th grade, we lived in Antwerp, Belgium. I attended a French school and all of the new students that didn’t speak French were put in a special class. We spent the entire year learning French, European geography and the metric system. I had become fairly fluent by the end of the year when we returned to Bartlesville. My sophomore year at Sooner I enrolled in French 1; but unfortunately, the teacher graded on the curve, which was not at all beneficial for the rest of the class. If you happened to have been in that class, I also thought it was unfair!

Submission 16

I was the star witness in a murder trial of a woman who killed her 7th husband after 2 months (4 prior husbands had died or were sickened under mysterious circumstances). After the conviction, I was prominently featured in the True Detective magazine write up.

  1. Submission number 1 – I was born in Oklahoma. My wife’s name is Kelli Lou Thelma Liz. I’m not responsible for what I’m doin’ ’cause my mother made me what I am. Not everything I write or say is factually correct. But my opinions are.

  2. I was voted the hardest to find at the 45th reunion although I only lived an hour away. Coach Holbrook counseled me and suggested vocational school. Graduated from college with a 5 year degree anyway. Have been a volunteer firefighter for over 35 years. Spent my entire public education (1st thru 12th grade), with Roger Rice.
